This paper describes how diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the Iranian and North Korean nuclear crises have so far yielded few positive results. It states that although a political solution will ultimately be required, the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) plays an interim role in denying Iran and North Korea access to technology, equipment and materials for their nuclear and missile programs, while long-term political solutions are sought. The paper explains that if the PSI participant countries could improve intelligence on Iran and North Korea’s nuclear acquisitions and procurement networks and additionally develop a more integrated strategy that incorporates various approaches, then the effectiveness of the PSI would likely increase, despite the lack of support from several important countries.
