This publication examines the US war on terrorism in the trans-Saharan region. It discusses the construction of the terrorist threat in the region and the implications for both US policy and the Saharan countries. The authors investigate the situation in specific countries by analyzing open source information. They identify two commonly used but conflicting explanations for the US presence in the area, point to their difficulties, and suggest a third alternative explanation.
