This paper outlines the recent trend in foreign development assistance toward "sustainability," which stresses community mobilization, education and cost-recovery. The authors examine evidence from randomized evaluations on strategies for combating intestinal worms. Their results suggest that the pursuit of sustainability may be an illusion and that in the short-run external subsidies will remain necessary. Other topics include a case study on a primary school deworming project in Kenya, the impact of subsidies on drug take-up and the impact of health education.
