Jun 2002

This publication examines the correlation of inequality with growth and long-run economic development. By analyzing cross-country data, the author concludes that commodity endowments predict the middle class share of income and the middle class share predicts development. Thus the author finds high inequality to be a large and statistically significant barrier to economic prosperity and development.
