This paper analyzes the activities and motivations of village deminers in rural Cambodia and compares these with professional mine action as it has been developed since the early 1990s. The study intends to provide a comprehensive insight into the difficulties and problems faced by villagers living and working in mine-affected areas and the nature of their mine-clearance activities. The author emphasizes that there is a need for a community-development approach which transmits the technical knowledge of mines and clearance procedures to people living in mine-contaminated regions.
