This paper shows that a lack of political consensus in the South and opposition to the various peace processes by nationalist and Buddhist pressure groups have made peacebuilding difficult in Sri Lanka. The author emphasizes the need for public figures in the peace process who are regarded as taking Buddhist concerns seriously while at the same time advocating core Buddhist values such as nonviolence, compassion and universalism.
