In 2000 the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1325, which stands as a landmark for the recognition of women’s rights in armed conflict. This study looks at the participation of women in peace and reconciliation efforts in the Great Lakes region, with a particular emphasis on the integration of grass root women and their concerns. To illuminate this issue, the authors address to what degree women are included in peacebuilding and how these lessons can be transformed in field activities that better include women at all levels in order to bridge the gap between grass root and political level.
