This paper examines applications of international military force in peace operations and discusses broader policy challenges of peace operations based on a review of the literature. The author highlights some of the problematic aspects of the use of international military force so as to be able to better understand the challenges faced by the military in peace support operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The paper also includes a preliminary set of policy recommendations to indicate areas in which there is a need for further analytical work.
