This paper outlines the potential benefits and challenges involved in an increase in female military participation within the Norwegian armed forces. The author examines how scholarly literature deals with the issue of women’s military participation and summarizes views expressed by a number of interviewees within the Norwegian armed forces and the UN system on this issue. The paper argues that by increasing the number of women, the Norwegian armed forces would expand the variety of its members’ qualifications and skills, which would make the them more effective in meeting security challenges.
