This paper provides an examination of Chinese military concepts for 21st century warfare. The author explains how China's armed forces have embarked on a rapid modernization drive to prepare for the 21st century battlefield and to enable the country to project military power well away from its land borders and territorial waters. The paper details how the underpinning of the updated professionalism of the People's Liberation Army is the basic doctrine of active defense (jiji fangyu), which seeks to conduct the traditional Chinese concept of "people’s war" under modern conditions.
