This paper addresses the backsliding of democracy in Thailand, Bolivia, Venezuela, and Russia. The authors explore the underlying reasons of reversal in some of the world’s fledgling democracies, and offer practical recommendations how to help these states stay on track toward political stability. In particular, they argue that public officials in industrial and developing countries should focus on ensuring that government leaders are constrained by effective checks and balances.
