This paper examines the international reaction following Kosovo’s declaration of independence. The author outlines why advocates of statehood for the former Serbian province believe it is the best of a number of unsatisfactory options. It remains to be seen whether the clarification of Kosovo's status will lead to the stabilization of the Western Balkans. The author explains that long-term and comprehensive peacebuilding is indispensable for the viability of Europe’s youngest state, and that the challenge associated with Kosovo is daunting for Europe and its partners.
