This paper examines the role and position of China as a normative foreign policy actor. The author states that even though China's policy behavior is often judged in terms of its compliance with western norms, the evolution of China’s own policy norms merits serious attention. The paper examines the Chinese interpretation of normative action through the analysis of eight case studies in Chinese foreign policy.
