The Global Militarization Index (GMI) highlights the relative weight and importance of a country’s military apparatus in relation to its society as a whole. Of the 151 countries analyzed in 2017, the most militarized ones are, in order, Israel, Singapore, Armenia, Russia, South Korea, Kuwait, Jordan, Cyprus, Greece and Brunei. In addition, the report also 1) highlights the impact of the sharp decline in oil prices on military spending, particularly in the Middle East and South America; and 2) positions the degree of degree of militarization relative to Transparency International’s Government Defence Anti-Corruption Index.
