This article maintains that African policymakers must pay attention to the links between maritime economic prosperity and maritime security to ensure that the continent can benefit from the sustainable use of its ocean waters. The authors also provides guidance on what this should involve at by outlining recommendations on how to improve the quality of maritime governance at a national and regional level. These include 1) that all African Union member states must ratify the African Charter on Maritime Security, Safety and Development; 2) that the development of maritime policies should be a collaborative and collective process, and more.
