This brief first highlights how sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) threatens the ability of women to participate in political processes. The text then provides a number of recommendations on how the US government might address the SGBV problem, including 1) sufficiently staffing and resourcing the Department of State’s Office of Global Women’s Issues, and 2) encouraging US agencies that engage in democracy-promotion to integrate SGBV training into their programs.
