This paper analyzes common problems in Indian border security. The author details how Indian border security is impacted by increased cross-border terrorism, infiltration and ex-filtration of armed militants, the emergence of non-state actors, the nexus between narcotics traffickers and arms smugglers, illegal migration, left-wing extremism, separatist movements aided and abetted by external powers and the establishment of madrassas, some of which are potential security hazards. The paper highlights the suggestions made by a specialized border security task force and details how the recommendations of the task force have been accepted by the relevant authorities. The author concludes that while some action has been taken and some task force recommendations have been implemented, clearly more needs to be done to make Indian border management more effective.
