This paper details how Sri Lanka has formally slipped into a war mode in January 2008 when the government unilaterally abrogated the Ceasefire Agreement (CFA) with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). The author explains how the casualties since then have been rising and displacements are appalling. The paper examines whether India can do anything to bring peace to the island at the outset of the conflict and what general policy options the Indian government may have at its disposition for dealing with the renewed fighting in Sri Lanka.
