This paper looks at the preventive effect of visits by health professionals in prisons against torture and ill-treatment. The results are based on interviews with various physicians specializing in visits to places of detention. The paper demonstrates the necessity of including, among others, physicians and/or other qualified health professionals at all levels of prevention, as well as the importance of a permanent system of unannounced visits to all places of detention.
