This publication examines the Japanese one-village, one-product (OVOP) approach to development cooperation with Africa. The authors argue that private sector development is crucial for growth, development and employment creation. Recognition of this has led donors to increasingly target the private sector with their support programs. The paper examines how the OVOP approach fits with other donor approaches and how it relates to the development of small- and medium-size enterprises. It also presents preliminary findings from Malawi's experience with OVOP.
