This paper discusses the role of values in foreign politics and suggests some frame of thinking about a values-based foreign policy. The author argues that the surest way of advancing the nation’s values is to recognize how little one nation can actually do. Furthermore, he states that for countries similar in nature, with an important values component in their national identity, such as the US and Australia, the inclusion of values in national foreign policy is inevitable.
