This text's author examines China’s response to the responsibility to protect (R2P) concept has gone through three phases – opposition (2000-2005), toleration (2005-2008) and qualified acceptance (since 2009). In the last case, however, Beijing remains wary about using force in R2P scenarios unless it meets two criteria.
