This paper analyzes the untapped and hidden potential of university-generated intellectual property (IP) and its possible contribution to Canada’s innovation economy. While Ottawa continues to finance a sizeable amount of public research and development (R&D) within its universities, the paper’s author argues that it is not particularly effective in ensuring that the ‘brain work’ being done is then commercialized. In response to this disconnect, the author provides a set of recommendations that will maximize Canada’s commercialization efforts, which includes linking university-generated IP more closely with Canadian companies.
