Making cities inclusive is an aim of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the UN member states as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Access to public spaces is also a key sub-goal. This publication argues that despite this, access by street vendors and other marginalized groups to public spaces in urban Africa seems to be on the decline. In response, the text’s authors discuss why this is so, what processes lie behind the decline and what the effects are for groups that depend on public space for survival.
