This publication analyzes processes of Islamist radicalization in Egypt and Tunisia by way of a literature review as well as through the development of a theoretical framework. More specifically, the text’s authors 1) provide an overview of academic publications and grey literature on radicalization; and 2) develop a theoretical framework that identifies key mechanisms that link socioeconomic factors -- including socioeconomic grievances, socioeconomic opportunities and framing processes that build on socioeconomic narratives -- and Islamist radicalization.
