This paper explores the concerns over the new Georgian government’s parliamentary super-majority, which could lead to constitutional amendments that undermine the state’s current system of checks and balances. According to the text’s author, upholding Georgia’s democratic credentials will also depend on the government’s ability to preserve political pluralism, expand media freedoms, depoliticize the judiciary, and move beyond its retributive style of governance. Oh, and let’s not forget the country’s enduring economic problems and the unresolved problems with Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
