This paper discusses the development of environmental issues in China and Southeast Asia, especially those caused by the construction of large-scale dams that have high relevance within individual countries and in terms of relations between neighboring countries. It points to the manner in which environmental issues are frequently combined with human rights issues and to the increasingly important part this plays in regional politics. It also evaluates how the issues of climate change, the politics of water, its use and availability are receiving greater global attention.
