This paper examines the left-wing critiques of the Australia-US alliance. It argues that the alliance is in Australia’s best national interest and that it deserves the support of progressives in particular. It further explores what being an ally requires from Australia and examines the difficult issue of the country's influence in Washington. It concludes with outlining how a Labor Party government would have to manage the alliance.
