This paper explains how conventional approaches to solving the situation in Cyprus have traditionally revolved around the concept of a bizonal, bicommunal federation. The author points out how the two communities in Cyprus however have different interpretations of the concept and how within both communities there exist various and confused perspectives. The paper focuses on four different possible scenarios, namely that of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, a stalemate continuation of the status quo, a two-state solution and a functional federation with loose bizonality. The author examines the political economic aspects associated with the four different scenarios.
