This paper explores the pros and cons of Switzerland's policy approach toward the EU. It provides an overview of the cooperation fields between Switzerland and the EU, reviews relations before the backdrop of advancing European integration and examines the degree of factual sovereignty Switzerland can secure vis-à-vis the EU. Subsequently, the author looks at the vulnerabilities and prospects of the country's bilateral approach and argues that the balance sheet of sovereignty is already ambiguous.
