This paper discusses the role of low external input technology (LEIT) in rural poverty reduction and sustainable agriculture development. It is argued that knowledge-based innovations that respond to local conditions with local resources are preferred, as they can help build farmers' human and social capital. The author examines farmers' practices in successful LEIT projects and seeks to understand the long-term consequences of such projects.
