This paper discusses the development of biofuels and their potential contribution to agriculture and rural growth as well as their impact on poverty reduction. It focuses on two types of liquid biofuels produced from purpose-grown crops and explores the trends of production and trade and their prospect for helping reduce poverty. It further examines critical questions related to the debate about food security and biofuels and points to the need for country-by-country analysis of potential poverty impacts.
