This paper discusses the small and medium forest enterprises (SMFEs) and their role as a promising option for poverty reduction and forest conservation through sustainable forest management. It argues that there are still significant challenges to the development of viable SMFEs which, together with governments and nongovernmental agencies, have an important role to play in the process.
