This paper discusses the efforts of Community Forestry (CF) in the Amazon region. It argues that CF has not yet met the expectations of effectively combining forest conservation, rural development and poverty reduction objectives. It further recommends how more effective support can be provided to communities in using forests to improve rural livelihoods and notes that considerable external resources are needed to overcome the many barriers inherent in the current CF framework.
