This paper discusses the relation of rural poverty exit strategies with agricultural growth trends and the contingent factors that support these trends. It analyzes data from five countries and argues that the three main factors that would help make agriculture work for the rural poor are infrastructure, education and information. It further discusses the role of land tenure and argues that it alone is not sufficient to reduce poverty but needs to be combined with other poverty exit strategies.
