This paper explores the reasoning behind popular choices of political regimes in societies that recently completed a transition to democracy. It discusses the type of the rational bases used for preference formation by focusing on urban Brazilians. The authors’ hypothesis is that an instrumental rationality prevails alongside axiological rationality.
