This paper examines whether and how wildlife is a source of rural growth and development in East Africa, and whether its potential could be tapped more fully. It focuses particularly on the tourism industry as the sector offering the greatest wildlife-related growth opportunities. It argues that East Africa will have significant long-term comparative advantage in wildlife-based tourism and questions whether this is being integrated into the development agenda.
