The paper analyzes the complex relationship between democracy and development through a detailed literature review. First, the author examines definitions and basic concepts employed by academics and policymakers. The logic behind arguments promoting a causal link between the two is highlighted. The author cites tension within the international community and lack of consensus about the effects of democratization on development goals.
