This statistical study explores the variables that influence social capital - the degree of interpersonal trust and cooperation found in a given society - and political trust in Ghana and Nigeria. It finds that the most salient determinant of social capital in Ghana and Nigeria is confidence in political institutions. The author argues that these results favor an institutional explanation of social capital.
