This paper studies mass attitudes and trust in Africa toward political ruling and opposition parties. It finds that the normative function of individuals' respect for "father-leaders" hinders political competitiveness, and therefore the responsiveness of political systems in Africa. The author challenges conventional analyses of party system evolution by adopting a mass public, rather than elite perspective.
