This paper explores the role of ethnicity in Sub-Saharan African political systems. It finds evidence to suggest that ethnically dominated voting is antithetical to democratization. The authors call for integrative electoral systems and improved social and economic conditions to reduce the demand for and supply of ethnically dominated political parties. Afrobarometer survey data informs this study.
