This paper assesses what aspects of social capital in Sub-Saharan Africa promote and perpetuate political violence. It finds that membership in a professional or business association is linked with higher incidences of political violence. Conversely, membership in a religious organization favors lower rates of political violence. Afrobarometer survey data - conducted in 18 Sub-Saharan African countries - informs this study.
