This paper theorizes about how various aspects of elections reduce winner–loser gaps in perceived institutional legitimacy and democratic consolidation. These aspects are said to include turnover, peaceful procedure, opposition party acceptance and accountability. The authors find that electoral turnovers alone have a moderating effect on political discord. They test their hypotheses using Afrobarometer micro-level survey data and national-level electoral data in Africa from 1989 to 2006.
