This paper examines the significance of ethnicity as a political cleavage across selected African countries. It develops a measure of "ethnic voting" deemed reflective of all significant parties and ethnic groups. The authors then use the measure to show variations in the salience of ethnicity as a political cleavage. The study employs data from 1999 to 2006 and is informed by Afrobarometer survey data.
