This paper studies the incidence of corruption and its institutional implications in selected African countries. It concludes that corruption is the chief obstacle to building popular trust in state institutions and electoral processes. Additionally, the authors argue that corruption inhibits the development of mass attitudes favorable to democracy. It is informed by Afrobarometer survey data.
