This paper examines the divergence between preference for democracy and satisfaction with its outcome in selected African countries. It considers, in particular, two competing interpretations of democracy - intrinsic (individualism) versus instrumental (cooperative) - to frame the discourse. Results discuss the role of ethnic fractionalization, electoral systems, political institutions and economic development. It is informed by Afrobarometer survey data.
