This paper investigates empirically the factors that influence variations in democratic attitudes in 18 African countries. It pays particular attention to the role of education in endorsing democracy and how its influence can be explained. It concludes that education is the dominant social structural factor conditioning support for democracy. Religion, conversely, is of little consequence.
