This paper evaluates the extent to which identity-based voting can explain Malawi's regional make-up. It finds that identity influences patterns of partisanship. The authors argue that Malawi's elections from 1994 to 2004 have followed a "regional census" pattern, namely that geographic origin strongly predicts who a voter will support.
