This paper explores the link between security and development, commenting on the increasing securitization of development policy. It traces the changing approaches toward security and development since the end of the Cold War, identifies interdependencies between both issues and discusses the implications of the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001. Subsequently, the paper points to the dangers of a one-sided focus on security and reviews respective discussions in Switzerland. The author argues that the core challenges in implementing a coordinated approach to development and peace promotion policies are ensuring coherence and optimal use of synergies.
