This essay discusses changes taking place in Guatemala and much of Latin America that are not easily captured in data. It also addresses the challenges to future development in the region and the implications of those challenges for future US policies, which have focused almost entirely on drugs and migration. The author argues that Guatemala is just beginning to realize its enormous promise, but could also face some major obstacles to its progress.
